SHILLONG, Aug 20: Affected by the months-long lockdown and COVID-19, efforts are under way to complete the construction of the new Assembly building, located at New Shillong Township, before next year’s Budget session.
This was revealed during a spot inspection of the construction site of the new Assembly building by Speaker, Metbah Lyngdoh, and the Commissioner and Secretary, Andrew Simons, on Friday.
It was later informed that the project has been progressing well, and efforts are still on to complete the construction before the Budget session in 2022.
Meghalaya is without a permanent state Assembly building after the British-era building was destroyed in a devastating fire in 2001.
Since then, the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly functioned in the State Central Library auditorium. Subsequently, it shifted to a cultural complex in Rilbong.
