SHILLONG: Around 100 farmers have demanded compensation for the damage caused to their paddy fields by the ongoing construction of the Shillong bypass at Mawryngkneng.

The farmers from Deingpasoh till Mawryngkneng along with the members of the KSU and Seng Longkmie Diengpasoh met the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills, J Lyngdoh on Monday demanding compensation for their loss.

They alleged that the Infra Project Pvt. Ltd carrying out the construction of the bypass carelessly dumped soil in most of their paddy fields.

Seng Longkmie Diengpasoh president Risalang Sana said the small streams were also blocked due to the soil dumping.

“I have suffered the loss of around 50 sacks of rice due to the soil dumping in my field,” Hostarwell Kharbuli, a farmer, said.

The DC assured the farmers to investigate the matter and conduct a survey at Dewsaw and Mawkynring to realign the bypass since landowners had alleged that construction work was not carried out in accordance with the alignment.

It was alleged that survey of the land in the area was done without the knowledge of the landowners.
