Tea estate owner, wife burnt alive

Guwahati: Two persons were burnt alive when a group of disgruntled workers set fire to the bungalow of a tea garden owner at upper Assam’s Tinsukia district on Wednesday afternoon. Police recovered the charred bodies of the Kunapathar tea estate MK Bhattacharrya and his wife Rita

An official source informed that over 500 irate tea estate workers gheraoed the residential bungalow of Bhattacharrya and set it aflame at around 4-30pm .

The manager of the tea garden and his wife are the other two persons who were in the bungalow when the mob attacked. The tea estate was plagued by some problems related to tea workers for the past few weeks. The dispute aggravated during the last few days after the garden management had served a quit notice to 10 labourers two days ago and asked them to vacate their residential quarters. An FIR was also lodged by the tea garden management, following which the police had picked up three of the labourers on Wednesday morning.
