SHILLONG: South West Garo Hills Police on Monday arrested two persons for looting and assaulting a Medical Officer of Mahendraganj CHC, West Garo Hills, Dr Apchan A Sangma, on December 15 last.

Informing this, South West Garo Hills Police Superintendent of Police, R Muthu, said one of the arrested persons hailed from Bangladesh while the other was from Mahendraganj.

“We are further investigating into the case and hope that the medical staff will cooperate with us,” Muthu said.

In his complaint, the Medical Officer had alleged that around 15-25 miscreants were involved in the assault and loot case last month.

Reacting to a query on the agitation called on January 11 by the Meghalaya Medical Services Association (MMSA), Muthu said, “I along with the Deputy Commissioner recently held a meeting with the medical staff to discuss the issue, however, due to the absence of doctors, the meeting was held between us and the staff of the Mahendraganj CHC.”

He further informed that since last Saturday, police have been deployed on permanent duty at the said CHC for safety purposes as demanded by the medical staff.

On the other hand, members of the MMSA on Wednesday stood firm on their decision to carry on with their 24-hour cease work from 10 am of January 11 as a mark of protest against the failure of the State Government in taking action against the alleged miscreants involved in the crime.

MMSA president Dr R Nongbet said the State Government has time till Thursday to call them for talks and to respond to their demand for tight security to the medical staff at Garo Hills.

Further, Dr Nongbet said the delay in tackling this issue has compelled the members of the MMSA to decide on a time-limit work schedule from 10 am to 5 pm excluding holidays like other government officials.
