New Delhi: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Monday demanded employment of indigenous people in the prestigious NEIGRIHMS and greater role of the North Eastern states in the institute.

KSU president Daniel Khyriem and general secretary Auguster Jyrwa met Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad here and submitted a memorandum in support of this demand.

“Indigenous locals are rarely absorbed in NEIGRIHMS despite repeated demand by the Union for reservation for local people,” the memorandum said.

“The Union Health Minister assured us that he will take up all these issues and visit Shillong after the election process is over,” Khyriem told The Shillong Times after the meeting.

The KSU leaders later met former Union Minister of State and Shillong MP Vincent H Pala and submitted a copy of the memorandum to him to follow up the issue with the Centre.

The KSU also demanded that a sub-committee under the chairmanship of the NEC Secretary with executive members and representatives of all N-E states should look after the day to day management of the institute. The Union also demanded greater role of the Meghalaya Government in the institute since it is based in Shillong.

The KSU also expressed dismay over the fact that the Executive Council of NEIGRIHMS was held after a gap of 17 years.

The KSU also demanded for recognition of the institute by the Medical Council of India (MCI) saying that the institute is taking students from all over the country though it is yet to be recognized by the MCI, leaving the students in a quandary.
