SHILLONG, Dec 9: Power Minister Prestone Tynsong has underscored the need to install smart meters at each and every house in the state for the debt-ridden Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) to recover dues from consumers.
He said he was keen on reviving the MeECL and holding a series of review meetings with the management of the corporation for ideas of increasing revenue.
The Power department has a liability of more than ₹2,000 crore accumulated over a decade.
“We are in the process of improving our revenue generation and I am sure we will cut down on the losses,” he told The Shillong times Thursday.
Admitting that it is a complicated problem with many individuals and organisations unable to clear their bills, the minister assured that the entire process will be streamlined in due course of time.
“This is the reason the government of India came up with the guideline for installing smart meters in each and every house. If we can do this, it will help us recover the outstanding dues,” he said.
He added that the MeECL authorities have been directed to focus more on areas where they can generate revenue and plug the leakage at the same time.
“We have directed the MeECL to work out all the details and take action,” he said.
