SHILLONG: Taking into consideration the rising trend of crime against women in the state, Social Welfare Minister Deborah Marak on Monday asked the Meghalaya State Commission for Women to find a out a solution to this problem as soon as possible before the matter goes out of control.
The minister who met the members of the MSCW here at Meghalaya Secretariat Conference Room on Monday discussed at length the issues pertaining to frequent atrocities and crime against women and children.
Expressing a sense of urgency to deal with such cases, Marak said that the days where women and children were respected in the society can no longer be found.
The social welfare minister has also extended her full support to the Women Commission for solving this problem and urged the Commission to find out the root cause of all these problems.
Meanwhile, chairperson of the State Women’s Commission, T Phanbuh asserted that the traditional culture of the society has been forgotten due to the influence of the western culture. She also pointed out that the presence of wine shops in and around the educational institutions adds to the problem. On the other hand, member of the Commission GR Marak, stationed in Williamnagar narrated the recent rape incident of Williamnagar which she felt that proximity to coal belt and free flow of money in the area, increase of school dropouts and insurgency problems are few reasons causing such problem.
The meeting also decided to hold a Conference on Crime and Violence against women and children in Williamnagar on March 26.
