Brick factory to wind up operations

NONGPOH: Succumbing to stern opposition from the people of Meghalaya and Assam, a factory producing bricks at Byrnihat, will wind up its operations in the area.

Following a meeting of a joint action committee named Meghalaya-Assam Action Committee on Wednesday, Nongrim Rangbah Shnong Medhi Syiem, who is the vice president of the Committee, told The Shillong Times that the owner of Mittal Coke Factory has agreed to suspend operations and signed an agreement with the Committee to close down the factory.

Pollutants from the factory, poses grave threat to the health of the people.

The factory located at Byrnihat, Assam, was set up recently and produced red brick by using coal which resulted in large scale emission of smoke leading to air pollution and posed a grave threat to the health of the people in the vicinity.
