SHILLONG: The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), which has been roped in by the State police to facilitate the installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at important locations and strategic points of the city, is currently working out the technical details of the project.

BSNL General Manager, George S Marshal on Thursday said that the work for the project is making a smooth progress.

“We are working on details like the locations where the cameras would be installed and the same would be completed within a month’s time following which the project would require the necessary funding,” he said.

“We expect the sanctioning of the project in the next four to six months time,” the BSNL General Manager added.

According to Marshall, digital mega pixel cameras will be installed in the city.

“They are the best in the country as even a city like Delhi has analog cameras,” he said.

Amid rising security threats across the country, the CCTV cameras are being installed to make Shillong safer.

Under the system, all the feeds recorded in the CCTV cameras will be sent to Central Control Room where the footage will be kept for a year.

The system is expected to help in improving the law and order situation in the city.

The cameras will cover the entire city when the project becomes fully operational and a similar initiative would follow in Tura.

It may be mentioned that the State Police had earlier asked the individual commercial establishments in and around Shillong to install CCTV cameras.
