SHILLONG: Expressing concern over the growing unemployment in the State, Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma on Tuesday said that Meghalaya has not been able to fully utilise the reservation for Scheduled Tribes while applying for jobs.

Dr Sangma also noted that youths from the State have not been able to compete well at the higher level, especially in competitive examinations like the Civil Services.

The Chief Minister was replying to a motion moved by Sohra UDP legislator, T Chyne, on the growing unemployment in the State.

Chyne pointed out that the unemployment rate in the districts has gone up by 60 per cent and the problem promises to linger.

Acknowledging the problem, Dr Sangma said that there is a need for creating jobs in Government as well as private sectors.

It may be mentioned that the State Government recently constituted the Employment Generation Council wherein officials from different government agencies have been asked to assist the youth in securing jobs.

According to Dr Sangma, youths of the State have not been able to apply for the jobs due to lack of information and the Council will be equipped with all the information besides having a calendar for recruitment.

He also said that the Government will focus on encouraging entrepreneurship

and self employment besides stressing on the need for skill development.

The Chief Minister also said that the government intends to come up with residential schools, engineering colleges and super speciality hospital which will go a long way in providing employment to the youths of the State.
