SHILLONG: The ambitious Megha Health Insurance Scheme (MHIS), launched by the State Government with much fanfare, has run into trouble after glaring confusions cropped up in the enrolment process which is underway in various localities in the city.

The confusion came to the fore during the MHIS enrolment process in Mawprem locality when many residents complained that their names were not available in the electoral list that is being used for the enrolment process.

Several residents were denied enrolment after it was found that their names were missing in the electoral rolls.

“There is a total confusion about the scheme and the Government must come out clear on it,” an angered resident said after being denied enrolment under the MHIS.

Similar confusions had cropped up during the enrolment drive in Golf Link area.

When contacted, Health and Family Welfare Minister AL Hek clarified that presently citizens are being enrolled on the basis of the 2007 electoral rolls.

“We could not use the latest electoral roll as the scheme was launched in 2012 and the latest electoral roll was prepared only in January just before the Assembly elections,” Hek said, while adding that the latest electoral rolls would be used from next year for enrollment of people under the MHIS.

Commissioner and Secretary of Health and Family Welfare, DP Wahlang, while reacting to the confusion cropping up during the enrolment process, said that any person who faces difficulties during the enrolment process should immediately lodge a complaint at the MHIS office and the department will take cognizance of the complaint.
