MAWKYRWAT, Aug 1: After the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) and Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), the Hynniewtrep A’chik National Movement (HANM) South West Khasi Hills District has joined the clamour against proposed move to resume uranium mining in the district as well as any other part of the state.
Speaking to media persons here, president of HANM South West Khasi Hills District, Lambokstar Marwein, has asked Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong to speak against uranium mining on the floor of the Assembly and not only in the media.
“If he (Prestone Tynsong) and the government are against uranium mining, he should openly speak against uranium mining in the Assembly,” Marwein said, while also demanding of the two MLAs from South West Khasi Hills — Renikton L Tongkhar from Mawkyrwat and Pius Marwein from Ranikor — to articulate their stand on uranium mining.
The HANM leader said that the organisation will oppose tooth and nail any move of the state and the central government to resume uranium mining in the district.
Earlier, the KSU had issued similar warning after DoNER Minister Jitendra Singh had made a statement on Centre’s plans to resume uranium mining.
