8-day Army bike expedition ends

SHILLONG, Aug 11: After eight days of trans-Meghalaya ride, covering over 1,100 kms, a bike expedition team of the Indian Army on Wednesday received a warm welcome at Umroi Military Station.
According to a statement, the bike expedition, thematised on ‘Freedom Ride — Trans Meghalaya Monsoon Odessey’, began on August 3 “to pay homage to the freedom fighters of Meghalaya as well as glorify the unseen beauty of the state”.
During the expedition, the team visited the memorials of U Kiang Nangbah, Pa Togan Nengminja Sangma and U Tirot Sing and paid homage to them on behalf of the Indian Army.
The expedition team was on Wednesday flagged in by Governor Satya Pal Malik at a grand military ceremony in Umroi in the presence of GOC Red Horns Division and civil dignitaries.
The ceremony commenced with a Guard of Honour to Governor Satya Pal Malik and was followed by the arrival of the freedom ride at the venue led by the army band on a ceremonial tune.
The Governor was and the riders were felicitated also felicitated during the programme.
“A grand cultural extravaganza showcasing the valour of the Indian Army by virtue of marshal dances and martial tunes were also organised along with special programme by students of Army Public School Umroi to commemorate the event,” the statement said.
