SHILLONG: Former Congress legislator Robert G Lyngdoh has admitted that he has been approached by both the Congress leaders as well as the regional parties to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha polls from the Shillong Parliamentary seat, even though he stated that he was yet to take any decision on returning back to politics.
“Many senior Congress leaders had approached me to contest the Lok Sabha polls from the party. I have not given any commitment to the Congress leaders since much time is left for the election,” Lyngdoh told The Shillong Times.
“The situation might change since there is still a long time for the election. The party might find another alternative candidate. We must not forget that the Congress has a sitting MP who might again win the favour of the party leaders and re-contest the election,” the former Congress legislator said.
While replying to a query, Lyngdoh said that there are indications that the Congress leadership is not happy with the performance of the sitting MP or else they would not have approached him.
“The problem in the regional parties is they are yet to combine as one single force. The regional parties would have to put up a consensus candidate otherwise the Congress would easily retain the Shillong Parliamentary seat,” the former legislator observed.
Lyngdoh, however, asserted that he was yet to take a final decision on making a comeback in politics.
“At the moment, I am very keen to take up the offer of the Martin Luther Christian University,” Lyngdoh said.
The former politician is slated to assume office as the Vice Chancellor of MLCU on July 1.
