SHILLONG, Sep 11: Role-play performance, candlelight vigil and thought invoking speeches on suicide prevention highlighted a programme organised by the Department of Psychology, Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU), at Motphran on Saturday, which aimed to raise awareness in the society and promote stakeholder collaboration and self-empowerment to address self-harm and suicide through preventative action.
In keeping with this year’s theme for World Suicide Prevention Day — “Creating Hope through Action” — Iwapaka Shullai, faculty of the department, spoke on how the society has the responsibility and power to nurture hope through action.
A role play act was performed by the students emphasizing on how to detect and identify warning signs of suicidal intentions, and to help and guide such persons towards professional help.
A candlelight vigil to remember those who lost their lives and those affected by suicide was carried out at Khyndai Lad on Saturday evening.
The students and faculty took part in a prayer and observed a two-minute silence for the lives lost to the menace and those that are affected by it.
