MAWKYRWAT, Sep 25: Leader of the Opposition and senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mukul Sangma on Saturday inspected the much-awaited 100-bed hospital in Mawkyrwat which has been hanging fire while its foundation stone was laid in as early as 2011.
Lamenting the prolonged delay in making the facility operational, Sangma, while speaking to newsmen after inspecting the 100-bed hospital and Mawkyrwat CHC, said the hospital’s infrastructure has the potential to greatly benefit the people of the district.
“It is an irony that the project which has been sanctioned in 2011 is yet to be operational. I would be glad to see if this hospital is operationalised immediately because it is quite long time. But the infrastructure that has been created is definitely something which will benefit the people of the district,” he said.
The Leader of the Opposition said the problem of shortage of specialist doctors will remain. “We definitely have huge gap between demand and supply in respect of manpower but hopefully these concerns will be addressed over a period of time and that is precisely the reason why we were working hard to have our medical college, the state’s own medical college,” he added.
After inspecting the Mawkyrwat CHC, Sangma expressed satisfaction to see that almost all the beds are occupied. “This is something which is encouraging because it has always been difficult to convince our people to have institutional delivery. But here we see lots of institutional delivery happen and it definitely reflect people’s willingness to get access to our existing healthcare system,” Sangma said.
He was happy to learn through the District Medical & Health Officer (DM&HO), Dr R Lartang, and other medical and health officers that they are effectively utilising the benefits of the Megha Health Insurance Scheme.
During the inspection, Sangma was accompanied by the DM&HO and other health officials and leaders of the TMC.
