SHILLONG: With the current term of Meghalaya Governor RS Mooshahary expiring in July, it is yet to be known whether the Centre will grant an extension of one more term to the Governor.

It was on July 1, 2008 that Mooshahary assumed office as the 12th Governor of Meghalaya. Sources said that though Mooshahary is keen to have another term, the Centre is yet to give any green signal in this regard.

Earlier, MM Jacob got an extension of term for almost

seven years after he served the first five-year term in the State as Governor in June 1995.

Soon after his appointment as the Governor of Meghalaya in 2008, Mooshahary, a former police chief, had to face political turmoil due to the tussle for power by both the Congress and the UDP-NCP combine. The power struggle resulted in the imposition of President’s rule by the Governor in 2009.

There were some pro active steps taken by the Governor to streamline the administration.

He had returned the controversial and flawed Meghalaya Lokayukta Bill passed by the Congress-led coalition Government which led to the House discussing the matter again during the April session.

Another move was to take action against CMJ University for its alleged faculty functioning.
