GUWAHATI, Nov 24: Northeastern Christian leaders, representing all the Churches of the region, assembled here in a meeting on Thursday and expressed concern over the unfortunate incident at Mukroh that resulted in the loss of six lives.
“Any loss of life is painful and we believe that the situation can be brought back to normal and the matter settled through a dialogue by the Assam and Meghalaya governments in an amicable manner,” Allen Brooks, spokesperson for the United Christian Forum of North East India (UCFNEI) told The Shillong Times here.
“During the annual meeting here, we expressed our pain at the unpleasant incident that happened along the inter-state border and express our solidarity with all those who are trying to settle the problems amicably. We appeal to all parties of goodwill to approach the entire matter with a sense of history and fair-mindedness,” Brooks said.
“What we want more than anything else is that an atmosphere of peace, collaboration and mutual assistance prevails among us in these days of growing political and economic anxieties,” he said.
The leaders present at the meeting represented the Council of Baptist Churches in North East India, Church of North India, Presbyterian Church of India, North East Christian Council (All Protestant Churches), Evangelical Fellowship of India (All Pentecostal Churches) and Regional Catholic Bishops Conference of North East India (All Catholic Churches of North East India).
The North East India Fellowship of Charismatic Churches also expressed sorrow at the loss of innocent lives at Mukroh. “We send our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families of Mukroh. We condemn the killings of the innocent people there. We pray that the Almighty God would comfort the bereaved families and bring peace and harmony to the state,” it said in a statement.
