SHILLONG, Nov 26: The Save Hynniewtrep Mission (SHM), a conglomerate of NGOs, on Saturday rejected the CBI probe into the Mukroh firing incident.
Speaking to reporters, Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) general secretary Roy Kupar Synrem said the HYC wants the case to be tried in Mukroh, West Jaintia Hills, even if the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is probing the case.
“We will not accept that this particular case should be tried in West Karbi Anglong district. Mukroh is within the territory of Meghalaya. Therefore, we would not like to see that this particular case be tried within West Jaintia Hills,” Synrem said.
If the case is tried in West Karbi Anglong, it would mean that the state has given away Mukroh village to Assam. He asserted that the Meghalaya government should demand of the Centre to ensure that the case is tried within the jurisdiction of Meghalaya.
Synrem observed that the Meghalaya Police should have registered an FIR on November 22 when the firing incident took place.
Echoing similar views, HYC president Robertjune Kharjahrin said the state police should have gone to arrest the “trigger-happy” Assam Police personnel and Assam Forest Protection Guard. Even he called for the case to be tried in West Jaintia Hills headed by the District and Sessions judge.
“We will not accept it if the case is tried in West Karbi Anglong,” Kharjahrin added.
