GUWAHATI: Over five years have passed by since a five-year-old child, Debajit Moran was killed in ‘crossfire’ by Indian Army during an operation against militants at bordering No. 1 Mohong village under Pengeri police station in Tinsukia district of Assam.

He was killed while he was playing with his elder sister Sonpahi at the courtyard of their residence on November 8, 2006 when they were hit by bullets fired by Army personnel. Debajit was killed while his sister was seriously injured.

The incident sparked spontaneous mass protests in the state especially in Tinsukia district forcing the state government to institute a high-level inquiry on November 9, 2006. The inquiry was headed by a senior IAS official of the state P C Sarma. However, the inquiry report was never submitted to the state government and the officer in charge of the inquiry in the meantime retired from the service as the chief secretary of the state.

The matter was brought up in the state Assembly today by Opposition Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) legislator Padma Hazarika who demanded action against the persons involved in the killing of the child and criticized the government to take any action for about six years since the incident had occurred.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi later informed that he would look into the matter and would institute a fresh inquiry into the incident of killing of the child allegedly by Army personnel during a counter-insurgency operation.
