SHILLONG: The North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute for Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) has called off its entrance examination for MBSS course following a directive from Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to allocate seats for the session 2013-14 as per the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) merit list.

“We received a directive from the Centre not to conduct any entrance test for the MBBS seats under the open category. We have been asked by the Ministry to wait for a fresh directive before deciding anything as far as 18 open category seats are concerned,” Dr Manuj Saikia, spokesperson of the institute said here on Tuesday.

On selection of candidates for seats reserved for the Northeastern states, he said the picture was still not clear.

“This uncertainty would end in the next few days,” he added.

Earlier on Monday, Health and Family Welfare Minister AL Hek said that the State government was yet to take a call on the implementation of the NEET while selecting candidates for MBBS course in various medical colleges under the State quota.

He even said that in the letter issued by Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on June 20 last it was mentioned that the allotment of seats should be based as per the examination conducted by the respective states.

The Union Ministry in the letter did make a reference to an interim order of the Supreme Court relating to the need of conducting NEET based on CBSE syllabus for allotment of MBBS seats as per the Central pool, Hek said adding “We are still examining the letter”.
