SHILLONG: After the recent intervention of the National Commission for protection of Child Rights, the State government is planning to set up its own commission for protection of Child Rights as per the requirement mentioned in the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights Act (NCPCR) 2005.
The rules prepared under this commission have already been approved by the cabinet recently and what is left now is the setting up of a search committee as per the rules which will be headed by the State Social Welfare Minister.
“The Minister concerned will decide on the date to set up a search committee which will recommend a chairperson and 6 other members from different fields”, Principal Secretary In-charge of Social Welfare PW Ingty told The Shillong Times.
Ingty is also hopeful that the commission will be functional this year to handle cases relating to child rights like violence, child labour and the likes. “This commission will look after all cases related to child welfare and the State commission will take the task of the national commission”, he said adding that the State commission has to prepare a report every year and send the same to Delhi.
The principal secretary also informed that the rules and regulations are envisaged as per the NPCR Act and the policies are framed in resonance with the protection of child rights as penned down in the act.
The Commission’s mandate is to ensure that all Laws, Policies, Programmes, and Administrative Mechanisms are in consonance with the Child Rights perspective as enshrined in the Constitution of India and also the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. The Child is defined as a person in the 0 to 18 years age group.
