NONGPOH, April 17: The Synjuk ki Rangbah Shnong (SKRS) in Ri-Bhoi has announced that a meeting of all headmen from the district will be held at Umsning auditorium on Wednesday to discuss various issues relating to the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) banning headmen from taking part in active politics, Roster System, the second round of boundary talks with Assam, Reservation Policy, the high cost of land registration, et al.
Informing this, the general secretary of the SKRS Ri-Bhoi, PB Sylliang, said that the SKRS cannot accept the diktat of the KHADC to ban headmen from taking part in politics.
According to him, headmen may take part in politics but cannot force people to vote for a particular candidate. “Therefore, the SKRS will discuss this issue in the meeting and come up with a resolution,” he said.
Apart from the KHADC’s notification, the meeting will also discuss other issues affecting the people of the district, which include the second round of boundary talks with Assam, the reservation policy, and the high cost of land registration.
“The Roster System will also be discussed during the meeting. This system was introduced to provide equal opportunities for employment to all sections of society, but it has faced criticism for being discriminatory towards certain communities,” he said.
Sylliang has, meanwhile, urged all headmen from the district to attend the meeting and participate in the discussions. “It is hoped that this meeting will provide a platform for headmen to voice their opinions and concerns regarding these issues and come up with effective solutions,” he said.
