SHILLONG, April 25: The state government is looking to renovate around 1,700 schools in Meghalaya within this financial year. This comes against the backdrop of growing concern regarding the infrastructure in many government schools, especially in Garo Hills region.
An official of the state government said that the government has already gone ahead with the programme of repairing and renovating the schools which are in a dilapidated condition.
Informing that the renovation of the schools will be taken up in three phases, the official said that school mapping analysis of these 1700 schools has been conducted.
The schools will be repaired and renovated in categories such as Group A to D, and the ones which need total renovation will be clubbed under Group A.
On the other hand, schools in Group C and Group D which require minor repair will be given an amount of Rs 5 lakh and Rs 1 lakh respectively.
As per reports earlier, the education sector in Garo Hills has taken a back seat with rotting infrastructure and lack of teachers being the root causes of most of the problems dogging the sector.
Meanwhile, officials also stated that the government has conducted an analysis and evaluation of the poor performance of many schools, especially in Garo Hills.
Informing that the Education department has issued show-cause notices to many poorly performing schools, the official said that there are many factors including social and economic for the poor performance of some schools in the state.
