SHILLONG, April 28: Water Resources Minister Comingone Ymbon said that the government will need to invest more than Rs 100 crore to come up with a permanent solution to protect the Balat and Dangar villages from the floods of Umngi river.
Talking to reporters after inspecting the river, Ymbon said that it will be a waste of government funds if there is no permanent solution to this issue.
It may be recalled that people who reside near the bank of Umngi river had to abandon their houses during monsoon due to the flood-induced landslides.
Ymbon was accompanied by UDP MLAs from Mawsynram and Ranikor, Olan Suin and Pius Marwein, besides former Mawsynram MLA, HM Shangpliang, during the inspection.
Ymbon was also briefed by the officials about how the floods had affected the residents residing near the river bank.
The Water Resources Minister has, meanwhile, informed that he will apprise Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma of this inspection, and stress the need to come up with a permanent solution to protect the villages near the banks of Umngi river.
