Karatekas display skills on opening day of tourney

SHILLONG: The opening ceremony of the the 21st Inter School and 4th Inter College Karate Tournament 2013 started on Thursday here.

FM Dopth, MCS, Director of Sports and Youth Affairs, was the Chief Guest and CW Dunai, Assistant Director, Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, was the Guest of Honour.

More than 350 participants from 67 schools and eight colleges are taking part in the competition.

The opening ceremony started with a welcome speech from Bryan Wallang, the Working President of the All Meghalaya Karate-Do Association, and a two-minute silence was observed in respect of the late sensei Stephan Leong, Founder of AMKA, who passed away in October 2011.

The medal winners on the opening day are as follows:

GIRLS:

Sub junior kata (under 12 years old): 1st Isadora A Lyngdoh, 2nd Patricia Pala, 3rd Stella Shallam.

Sub junior kata (above 12): 1st Phibariakong Langi, 2nd Naphisabeth Nongkynrih, 3rd Phikerbha Kharbihkhiew.

Below 18kg kumite: 1st Tessa Momin, 2nd Sheba Malngiang, 3rd Rimalin Marwein and Cornelian Basaiawmoit.

Below 20kg kumite: 1st Amaranthine Tongper, 2nd Riphika Khongwar, 3rd Adelfia Warbah and Reena Roy Dkhar.

Below 30kg kumite: 1st Lawandashisha Muttyent, 2nd Mebalaaihun Shongwan, 3rd Wandahun Kharbudon and Haphidari Phawa.

Below 35kg kumite: 1st Stella Shallam, 2nd Baby Lalchhanchhuahi, 3rd Daphne C Myrthong and Raphina Kharjana.

BOYS:

Sub junior kata (under 12): 1st Gerard A Nongkhlaw, 2nd Ialamphang Kharkongor, 3rd Simon Nongbet.

Sub junior kata (above 12): 1st Frankystar Momin, 2nd R Iaburomlang Lyngdoh, 3rd Josanky Rympei.

Below 18kg kumite: 1st Andy Paul Syiemlieh, 2nd Kynpham Kharkongor, 3rd Gideon Tympuin and Adrial M Sunn.

Below 20kg kumite: 1st Micky Phawa, 2nd Lige Lollen, 3rd Bashemphang Snaitang and Charles Snar.

Below 30kg kumite: 1st Josanky Rympei, 2nd Rahul Kumar, 3rd Ralf Marwein and Wanpynshngain L Mawphlang.
