Clean-up operation in RB village finds many takers

SHILLONG, May 29: In a bid to conduct waste clean-up operations in rural, semi-urban and urban locations and to draw the attention of the general public, governmental agencies and traditional institutions to the perils of non-biodegradable waste, Meghalaya Integrated Mountain Development Initiative (MIMDI), Shillong, the state chapter of the Integrated Mountain Initiative (IMI) organised The Himalayan Clean-up (THC) 2023 at the Mawlingai village under Umsning Block in Ri-Bhoi on Saturday along with all the states in the Indian Himalayan Region (IHR).
The clean-up operation saw the whole-hearted and enthusiastic participation of members of the Mawlingai Dorbar, the residents of the locality besides the office-bearers of MIMDI in cleaning up area by collecting solid waste including the single use plastics.
The volunteers then conducted a waste and brand auditing of the collected waste following the guidelines of GAIA in order to identify the major polluting brands attracting the provisions of the Extended Producer’s Responsibility (EPR) as laid down in the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016 amended in August 2021.
Earlier, a brief function was held wherein the Headman of Mawlingai Dorbar, Lumlang Mawkdoh welcomed all the participants and volunteers to the Himalayan Clean-up 2023.
He appreciated the initiative launched by MIMDI and for selecting Mawlingai village for this year’s clean-up operation.
The headman also requested the locals to lend their helping hand towards the clean-up.
