SHILLONG: The Assembly Secretariat on Monday cleared the appointment of NPP MLA James Sangma as the Opposition chief whip. The Opposition chief whip enjoys the rank and status of a minister of state. The Assembly Speaker AT Mondal has already recognised UDP leader Dr Donkupar Roy as the Leader of the Opposition and also Meghalaya People’s Front, an alliance of Opposition legislators.
According to sources, any whip issued by James will not be binding on MPF.
Since James belongs to NPP, the whip will be binding only to NPP legislators, sources added.
