SHILLONG: The separation of judiciary from executive will cost the state exchequer dearly as Rs 5 crore will be required annually for the administration of justice.

The separation of executive from judiciary was effected only in four districts — East Khasi Hills, West Jaintia Hills, Ri Bhoi and West Garo Hills. The Government is yet to effect the separation in the remaining seven districts.

Government has to spend Rs 5 crore annually for salary of the staff and for other additional expenditure, an official of the law department said.

The shortage of staff has also affected the speedy separation of judiciary from executive in the whole state.

The Government is planning to appoint 39 more judicial officers shortly and the MPSC has already recommended appointment of these officers, the official added.

So far, Government has appointed 36 judicial officers all over the State.
