SHILLONG, June 14: A major landslide occurred at Rngain along a stretch of Shillong-Dawki road, and cut off the road connection on Wednesday morning.
However, the traffic was allowed to move again from 8 pm.
Minor landslides had occurred at the same place on June 11 and 13 affecting the movement of vehicles for few hours.
The stretch of the Shillong-Dawki road at Rngain is prone to landslide during the monsoon, especially because of the road widening done as part of the Shillong-Dawki road project.
In view of this, the FKJGP Riwar Mihngi Circle has suggested that the state government should put a quick response team and heavy machineries in place in the event of another landslide in the area.
The FKJGP recalled the horrific incident from April 14 this year at Rngain in which two lives were lost following a landslide. It said that such tragedies should be avoided.
At least three drilling machines and two JCBs were engaged to remove the debris from the road after the landslide.
The FKJGP has also submitted a letter to the Additional Deputy Commissioner, Pynursla Civil Sub Division, to implement the resolution which was adopted during a meeting held on May 20 which was held between government officials and officials from NHIDCL.
