Shillong, July 3: Meta, the social network company, has revealed that it received a record-breaking 16,995 complaints through the Indian grievance mechanism in May.

The majority of these complaints, totaling 7,289, were related to inappropriate or abusive content. Additionally, there were 6,787 complaints about bullying or harassment, 699 regarding fake profiles, and 550 reports of account hacking. Under the new IT Rules 2021, Meta is required to publish monthly compliance reports.

According to Meta, they responded to 100% of the reports, offering users tools to address their issues in 2,325 cases. These tools include specific channels for reporting content violations, self-remediation options to download data, and avenues to address hacked accounts. Out of the remaining 14,670 reports that required specialized review, Meta reviewed the content based on its policies and took action on 2,299 reports. The company stated that the remaining 12,371 reports were reviewed but may not have resulted in action.

In April, Meta received 8,470 reports through the Indian grievance mechanism. During May, the company removed over 30 million pieces of content on Facebook and Instagram in India as part of its ongoing efforts to address security and user data privacy concerns. Meta employs a combination of artificial intelligence, community reports, and human review to identify and assess content against its policies.

Under the new IT Rules (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) 2021, all social media giants are required to submit monthly compliance reports.
