SHILLONG: Thursday will see the Government walking on thin ice as the much-anticipated talks will be held between the Khasi Students Union (KSU) and the Chief Minister over implementing Inner Line Permit (ILP) system in the State to safeguard the indigenous community from the onslaught of illegal migrants.

Speaking to The Shillong Times here on Wednesday, KSU president Daniel Khyriem said, “Our stand is clear, implement ILP based on the recommendations of the High Level Committee.”

On the other hand, the Government is looking for other options to contain influx, as Chief Secretary WMS Pariat recently expressed Government’s reservation on the implementation of ILP in the State.

When asked if the proposed ILP would hamper the development of the state, which has only recently seen a ray of development, Khyriem pointed out that the KSU is demanding not for an outdated, but a modern ILP that would look into all the segments of development.

During the meeting scheduled on Thursday, the State Government will present the practical difficulties of implementing the ILP to the NGOs who are adamant on the implementation of ILP in the State.

According to the KSU chief, Government should concentrate more on safeguarding and preserving the interests of indigenous people rather than thinking about development.

“If indigenous people cease to exist then what is the point of development in the State,” he said.
