SHILLONG, July 15: As the United Democratic Party (UDP), a major partner in the MDA Government, prepares to elect its new party president and other office-bearers, UDP working president Paul Lyngdoh has revealed that there is no system where party leaders contest for different posts in the UDP.
A nomination committee recommends the names to each of the positions including the president, Lyngdoh told reporters on Saturday. “So it is entirely up to the nomination committee,” he said.
Asked if the same people will continue to occupy the top positions, Lyngdoh said the party will wait for recommendations from the nomination committee.  The committee will nominate the name(s) for the post of the president and different office-bearers at the general council meeting of the UDP scheduled for July 29.
It may be recalled that Mairang MLA Metbah Lyngdoh had led the party as its president since 2019 after the demise of its former chief Donkupar Roy.
Metbah had earlier pointed out that he would not ask for “favours from my friends”, while shying away from making a direct comment on whether he should lead the party further ahead.
Although the tenure of the party’s chief executive committee had expired in 2022, the general council meeting was postponed because of the pandemic and Assembly elections.
The party’s general secretary, Jemino Mawthoh, on the other hand, had said that the nomination committee comprises all the district presidents, secretaries, presidents and secretaries of the frontal wings – the youth wing, womens’ wing and the farmers’ wing.
