SHILLONG, July 27: The FKJGP on Thursday urged the KHADC to empower the Dorbar Shnongs within its jurisdiction to prevent “outsiders” from settling in their respective localities and villages.
Talking to reporters after their meeting with KHADC CEM Pyniaid Sing Syiem and his executive members, FKJGP president, Dundee Cliff Khongsit said there is need to keep a tab on entry of people from outside, especially those coming with the intention of permanently settling here.
He said they have witnessed people registering their names in the electoral rolls within weeks of settling in the state.
“There are four or five constituencies in Shillong where the numbers of non-indigenous voters are more or less equal to the number of indigenous voters. We cannot take this lightly since this is an indication that we are slowly losing our political rights,” he said.
The FKJGP president said they have impressed upon the KHADC to avoid issuing fresh trading licences since many indigenous people are planning to set up their own businesses as they have realized the futility of waiting for government jobs.
“We should understand that it will not be possible for our youth to compete with non-tribals while taking any up business or trade. The Trading by Non-Tribals Regulation is clear that trading licences should not be issued for those trades which tribals are able to do by themselves,” Khongsit said.
