Tablet PCs distributed to students in WJ Hills

World Literacy Day observed in befitting manner

JOWAI: Deputy Chief Minister, Prof RC Laloo, on Thursday released Tablet PCs for Class XII students on the occasion of World Literacy Day observed here at Tpep-pale Hall.

The programme was organised by the office of the District Mission Coordinator, SSA-SEMAM, Jaintia Hills, on the theme ‘Literacy for the 21st Century’. Besides Prof Laloo, State Project Director, SSA-SEMAM and Secretary, in charge Education Department, FR Kharkongor, also attended the function.

D Phawa, District Coordinator in charge OOSC, SSA-SEMAM, Jaintia Hills, while briefing on the out of school children, informed that the enrolment of students this year in Jaintia Hills is 430.

Addressing the gathering, Prof Laloo lauded the District Mission Coordinator District unit SSA- SEMAM for their selfless efforts in promoting education but at the same time lamented on the low literacy rate of the district which stands at 63.26 per cent.

“I hope that in the coming years, the literacy rate in the District will improve with the support and determination of the teachers, students and other individuals to help our uneducated friends to read and write,” Prof Laloo said.

He urged every individual to make a resolution to find ways and means to target and achieve 100 per cent literacy rate in the District.

Prizes were also distributed for a slogan competition held earlier. Jowai Government Public School was awarded first prize for the Slogan ‘Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope’, while Jowai Presbyterian LP School and Little Angel Secondary School, Jowai bagged the second and third prizes respectively.

Teaching learning materials and transport allowances were also distributed to out of school students, while children with special need were presented with hearing aids and transport allowances.
