SHILLONG, Aug 28: The High Court of Meghalaya on Monday asked the state government to initiate necessary disciplinary proceedings against suspended Meghalaya police officer, GK Iangrai in accordance with the law.
The matter pertains to the perceived illegal procurement of vehicles by some officials of the Police department.
During the hearing on Monday, a status report was filed by the state pertaining to disciplinary and criminal proceedings against Iangrai (respondent No. 7).
The court made a critical observation that not much progress has been made in the disciplinary proceedings since the presenting officer was on leave and, upon rejoining, was diagnosed with typhoid. The court hoped that the officer has now recovered to carry the disciplinary proceedings forward in accordance with law.
The charge sheet has not been filed in four cases though in one matter the charge sheet has been filed and the government has granted sanction to prosecute Iangrai.
The court hoped that charge-sheets or appropriate reports would be filed in respect of the criminal cases in accordance with law and gave the state government six weeks to file a status report.
The case will now be heard again on October 9.
The petitioners in the case have claimed that several vehicles were purchased by the Police Department since 2019 without sanction from the competent authority and that a total number of 29 official vehicles were in the personal custody of Iangrai, who was the then AIG (Administration).
