Assault by school teacher

SHILLONG: Days after an FIR was lodged against a teacher of St. George School, Nongmynsong, for twisting the ear of an 8-year-old student on September 12 leading to injury, the mother of the girl has requested the police to withdraw the case and dispose the matter by way of compromise.

The mother had decided to withdraw the FIR after the teacher, Dominick Haokip, had promised not to repeat the incident. However, the teacher, who was arrested on September 13, is yet to get bail.

Haokip has been booked under Sec 324 of the IPC.

Reacting to the new development, CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing said, “The fact that the matter should end in comprising is a cause of concern as this act could be perpetrated on other children, who may be suffering in silence, as they dare not complain.”

Kharshiing has urged the police not to withdraw the FIR filed by the mother of the child, while demanding further investigation by police to find out who was trying to pressurize the mother into withdrawing the case.
