Mawkyrwat, Oct 10: The KSU South West Khasi Hills unit on Tuesday demanded the district administration to take immediate action against the BSF personnel from Bagli border outpost for their alleged involvement in forcibly seizing 45 bags of sugar worth Rs 1 lakh from a shopkeeper here recently.
The union met district Deputy Commissioner, T Lyngwa after receiving complaints that the BSF have misused their power by seizing the sugar.
Reportedly, the shopkeeper, Tilian Lyngdoh had reached out to the KSU after a group of BSF personnel, on September 28 entered the shop forcibly and seized the sugar accusing the shopkeeper of smuggling it to Bangladesh.
KSU president Forwardman Nongrem pointed out that the shopkeeper had pleaded innocence to the BSF personnel who did not pay heed to the shopkeeper’s plea. The shopkeeper also alleged that the BSF sold the sugar to other shopkeepers, wherein the personnel had told that it was handed over to the customs department after the seizure. The union condemned the BSF for allegedly misusing their power and being involved in the ‘day light’ robbery. The union therefore demanded that the deputy commissioner should immediately convene a meeting between the BSF, district administration and the union to make sure that such activities does not happen again.
The KSU also demanded that the shopkeeper should be compensated for his loss.
Meahwhile, the DC had assured an inquiry into the matter.
