SHILLONG, Oct 26: With an eye on the autonomous district council polls slated for next year, the KHADC has established the Delimitation Committee to determine the boundaries of the 30 constituencies under its jurisdiction.
According to the notice published on October 20, S Kharsyiemlieh, a retired judge from the District Council Court, would serve as the chairman of the committee, while former KHADC secretary, M Kharkrang will serve as secretary.
Professor in the Khasi department at NEHU, DRL Nonglait, retired school teacher R Myrboh, and former member, SL Marbaniang make up the other three members of the committee.
The committee’s terms of responsibility include creating its own guidelines for conducting business, making the proposed delimitation law available to the public, reviewing and addressing public representations, submissions, opinions, and comments, among other things, and holding hearings at designated places.
The committee shall submit the report at the earliest, the notification stated.
KHADC Deputy CEM, PN Syiem, told reporters on Thursday that the committee was established after the council received more than fifteen petitions from various villages asking the council to move their villages to other constituencies.
In response to a question regarding the criteria for reorganising different communities, Syiem stated that the committee will ultimately determine the final criteria, which will be based on the population and topography of such settlements.
It may be recalled that the KHADC had submitted to the district council affairs department a proposal for the delimitation of the council constituencies.
The tenure of the current House will end on March 5 of next year.
Syiem stated that the goal is to rationalise the number of voters and that the suggestion is for the adjustment of huge constituencies like Mawlai and others, but the number of constituencies will stay the same.
