Shillong, October 27: Reliance Jio, in collaboration with Luxembourg-based satellite telecommunications network provider SES, has successfully introduced JioSpaceFiber, India’s pioneering satellite-based giga-fibre service.

As per IANS, this groundbreaking service aims to offer high-speed and cost-effective internet connectivity in remote and inaccessible areas across the country. The unveiling took place during the ‘India Mobile Congress 2023,’ with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in attendance.

By harnessing the power of the world’s most advanced medium earth orbit (MEO) satellite technology, JioSpaceFiber is set to expand the digital landscape and connect millions who remain unconnected. Akash Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd, emphasized that this service will enable individuals across India to fully engage in the digital society, providing access to essential online government services, education, healthcare, and entertainment with gigabit speeds.

Reliance Jio currently serves over 450 million consumers with high-speed broadband fixed-line and wireless services. The introduction of the satellite network, powered by SES, will not only bring connectivity to remote regions but also bolster mobile backhaul capacity, further enhancing the reach of Jio True5G in even the remotest parts of the country.

Already, four of India’s most remote locations, including Gir, Gujarat; Korba, Chhattisgarh; Nabarangpur, Odisha; and ONGC-Jorhat, Assam, have been connected through JioSpaceFiber. This initiative aligns with the government’s ‘Digital India’ vision, delivering multiple gigabits per second of throughput to any location in India. John-Paul Hemingway, Chief Strategy Officer at SES, expressed their commitment to supporting this digital transformation, even in the most rural areas of the country, by delivering fibre-like services from space.
