TURA: The recent move by West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Pravin Bakshi to order the Tura Government College authorities to dissolve the current body of the college union has been challenged by the students’ body which has cited its constitution rules that allow only a two-third majority of the general body to be having the authority.
In a press statement to the media on Tuesday, the general secretary of the TGCSU, Balkarin Ch Marak, stated that the college union remains in place and neither the Deputy Commissioner nor the college authority can interfere in its functioning on the grounds that the union has been democratically elected by the bona fide students of the institute.
“We are elected by the bona fide students and the TGCSU has its own constitution in Article X clause (1) mentioning that dissolution against the student union can be passed by the two-third majority of the total strength of the general students. The order given by the Deputy Commissioner is baseless and immature,” alleged the TGCSU leader while accusing Bakshi of violating democratic norms with his order to dissolve the union body that went through a democratic process of election.
At the same time, the TGCSU has appealed to the college students to attend to their classes which have begun in full swing and prepare for the upcoming promotional exams and practical tests.
The union has also demanded that the government provide the necessary books for those students currently lodged in the Jowai Jail as part of the Right to Education Act in vogue in the country.
