SHILLONG, Jan 9: The AICC’s newly appointed Meghalaya in-charge, A Chella Kumar on Tuesday said leaders who backstabbed Congress can return to the party if they have faith in its ideology but fulfilling their expectations may be difficult.
He said this amid speculations that Congress has been approaching leaders like Mukul M. Sangma and Charles Pyngrope to come back to the party.
Stating that the MPCC is in the process of filling all party positions, Kumar said leaders who quit over the past few years can be considered for organisational responsibilities.
“We expect to win both the Shillong and Tura parliamentary seats,” he said, crediting Congress with establishing the NEHU, NIFT, Shillong-Tura highway, and other projects.
Kumar interacted with grassroots leaders of the party during his visit to the state.
“They are in a happy mood and want to bring back the Congress regime in Meghalaya,” he said while adding that party leaders and workers have promised to work unitedly for a positive outcome in the upcoming polls.
He further said the AICC has formed a screening committee to finalise the names of the candidates at an appropriate time. “A committee has also been formed to negotiate with other partners of the INDIA bloc,” he added.
Kumar insisted that the people of Meghalaya have always stood with Congress despite the hijacking of some leaders. “Congress has lost many elections but it has always bounced back,” he said.
On the sidelines, a group of Congress leaders officially joined the BJP on Tuesday.
Dr Wansainbor A Lyngwi of Sohra, Meialam Kharmalki and Elnathan Ryntathiang joined the BJP at a function here. They were welcomed by Cabinet Minister AL Hek besides other party functionaries of the BJP.
Dr Wansainbor A Lyngwi was earlier a KSU leader who later joined the grand-old party where he served as the general secretary of Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress.
Senior BJP leader AL Hek said their entry into the saffron camp will strengthen the party for Lok Sabha polls.
