SHILLONG: Constable Ajay Chettri, who was on duty when a suspect of a murder case, Abdul Kalam Azad managed to escape from Phulbari Community Health centre (CHC) recently, has been placed under suspension.

Chettri was suspended for dereliction of duty.

Informing this on Monday, Pravin Bakshi, DC, West Garo Hills District, said police would submit the internal inquiry report into the case to the district administration shortly.

Azad escaped from Phulbari CHC where he was taken for a regular medical check-up on Friday night.

Azad, who hails from New Bhaitbari, was arrested on Friday for his alleged involvement in the murder of a 70-year-old man Ram Chandra Thakur.

The suspect managed to give police a slip when the on-duty constable Ajay Chettri went to speak to the nurse on the former’s ailment, sources said.
