LS elections: Cong’s Tura seat aspirant takes the attack to NPP

SHILLONG: Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Zenith Sangma who is among the frontrunners for the Congress ticket to contest the Lok Sabha elections from Tura seat has taken the attack to the Opposition, National People’s Party which would be fielding its candidate who in all probability would be the main opposition contender for the Congress.

Speaking to The Shillong Times, Zenith took a dig at NPP chief Purno Sangma stating that despite enjoying a long stint in power, the veteran leader never delivered on his promises. “He took the advantage of the simple nature of the Garo people,” Zenith said.

Though many Congress stalwarts have applied for the party ticket from Tura seat Zenith is believed to be a strong contender for the ticket.

The Sports and Youth Affairs Minister said the people of Garo Hills are capable of choosing the right leadership during the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

He said that the trend in the last election when people handed majority to the Congress mainly because of the developmental works of the party in the last two to three years show the progressive mindset of the public.

Reacting to a query, he informed that he is leaving it on the party to decide on a role for him.

“I am willing to serve the people in whichever way the party feels,” he said.

He also claimed that party will sweep the elections in all the assembly constituencies of the state.

The Tura seat, currently held by Agatha Sangma, has been a stronghold of NPP leader Purno Sangma.

The NPP, however, was almost routed in Garo Hills in the last assembly elections in the state.

When asked if inflation and price rise would be a deciding factor in the elections, Sangma said that price rise is a global phenomenon and no Government can stop it from further increase.
