MLA among 23 candidates fail to declare poll spending

SHILLONG: Altogether 23 candidates including a sitting legislator have failed to file their election expenditure to the Election Commission of India.

The candidates were supposed to declare their election expenditures within 30 days after the announcement of the result.

The sitting legislator, who has failed to submit poll expenditure papers, is none other than NPP’s Dadenggre representative James Sangma.

Besides the sitting NPP legislator, the other candidates who are yet to file their poll expenditure are Manosha Warjri (Nongthymmai), Pyndapborthiaw Saiborne (Mawlai), Teiborlang Pathaw (Mawlai), Sofior Rahman (Rajabala), Grebith D Sangma (Salmanpara), Tonsing N Marak (Songsak), Purno K Sangma (Dadenggre), Sengman R Marak (Dadenggre), Sylvester Bulu Sangma (Phulbari), Hamsya Chen (Mawphlang), Fardian C Marak (Songsak), Rocky R Marak (Bajengdoba-Resubelpara), Monindro Rabha (Tikrikilla), Mrinal Marak (Tikrikilla), Rohinath Barchung (Tikrikilla), Benedick Marak (Tikrikilla), Jimmy D Sangma (Tikrikilla), Kapin Ch Boro (Tikrikilla), Majendra Rabha (Tikrikilla), Serazul H Kharkongor (Tikrikilla) and Shamsher Nongrum (Tikrikilla).

Earlier, the EC had issued notices to several candidates who had contested the 2013 Assembly election in the State for failing to submit details of the expenditure incurred during the election.

“If the explanation is not satisfactory to the Commission, a legislator can even be disqualified,” the source added.

Those who fail to file poll expenditure are liable for action including disqualification for three years from entering the electoral fray anywhere in the country.
