10 injured in lathicharge

Rangia:  At least ten persons were injured when police lathicharged protesters blocking the Indo-Bhutan international road today in lower Assam’s Baksa district over unabated thefts in the area.
Alleging there was a nexus between the police and the thieves leading to burglary in five shops at Dwarkuchi Bazar under Tamulpur police station on Thursday night, local residents blocked the road at Dwarkuchi Chowk for over two hours.
The Police which arrived there with SSB personnel resorted to lathicharge to clear the road for traffic movement and ten persons received minor injuries, police sources said.
The local residents claimed incidents of thefts were increasing in the district due to the alleged nexus between miscreants and some police personnel. (PTI)

Bomb-like objects found on rail tracks

Goalpara/Guwahati: Four bomb-like objects were recovered from train tracks between Dudhnoi and Krishnai stations in lower Assam’s restive Goalpara district this morning. Superintendent of Police Nitul Gogoi said local people noticed that wires were sticking out of jars kept on the tracks and informed the police.
Bomb experts have taken away the jars and would examine them, Gogoi said.
Northeast Frontier Railway Chief Public Relations Officer Subroto Lahiri said in Guwahati that train movement on the railway line was not affected by the recoveries.
Security measures have been intensified in the district, which has been witnessing protests against the upcoming Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council elections between November 13 and 25. The protesters were demanding that non-Rabha areas be excluded from the Council. (PTI)

Shinde to inaugurate ICP at Akhaura on Nov 17

Agartala: Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde will inaugurate an Integrated Check Post on November 17 near Indo-Bangla international border at Akhaura here, official sources said on Friday.
The Akhaura ICP is the second biggest between the two countries after Benapole-Petrapole in West Bengal. A multiuse world class ICP built at a cost of Rs 73.5 crore would be opened to boost trade between the two countries and smooth movement of passengers, the sources said.
The ICP has terminal buildings, cargo process building and modern custom and immigration facilities with high security and online and currency changing facilities, they said. The foundation stone for it was laid by then Union Home Minister P Chidambaram in May 2011.
Tripura shares 856 KM border with Bangladesh out of the total 4096 km border between the two countries. PTI

Bomb explosion in the heart of Manipur capital complex

Imphal: A powerful bomb exploded in the heart of Manipur capital complex at Thangmeiband area in Imphal west district but no casualty was reported, police said on Friday.
The explosion damaged parts of a house at around 10.30 PM last night, police said, adding the bomb was hurled at the house where a non-Manipuri trader was staying.
The incident occurred barely 24 hours after a powerful bomb explosion in Thoubal district on Wednesday night in which a non-Manipuri labourer was killed and six others injured.
Security measures have been tightened particularly in Imphal east and Imphal west districts in view of series of bomb explosions in the past two weeks. (PTI)
