SHILLONG, March 18: The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) has filed a petition in the Supreme Count of India, challenging the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019.
The petition was filed on Monday with a submission to the Supreme Court to issue a stay on its implementation.
Even though CAA 2019 has exempted the states of Mizoram, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur and also the Sixth Scheduled areas of Meghalaya, Tripura and Assam, the NESO lamented that as many as 27 districts of Assam have not been exempted from the purview of the Act which poses a serious threat to the entire NE region.

(Contd from P-1) NESO chairman Samuel Jyrwa said that CAA 2019 should not be made applicable in the Northeast to protect the microscopic indigenous communities of the region which is already taking a hit from unabated influx of illegal migrants from Bangladesh.
“The CAA 2019 should not be made applicable as it will only worsen the already precarious situation in the Northeastern region,” Jyrwa added.
