IMD Shillong celebrates World Meteorological Day

SHILLONG, March 23: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Shillong on Saturday celebrated ‘World Meteorological Day’ to commemorate the establishment of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) on March 23, 1950. The event was part of the yearlong celebration of IMD’s 150 years. The theme for this year’s celebration was ‘At the frontline of the climate action.’
Thangjalal Lhouvum, Director of IMD Shillong, provided insights into the history of the World Meteorological Organisation, India Meteorological Department, and the department’s journey in Shillong.
He also outlined the future plans of IMD Shillong for the state, including the installation of Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) in various locations, collaboration with agencies like BSF and SDMA, AWS stations in all famous tourist places and important public locations with help of concerned department and SDMA, proposed MoUs with MBMA for free data sharing of 102 AWS, with MeECL for data sharing and NOC for installation of AWS and with Water Resources Dept for AWS/ARG data sharing.
It also includes display of weather information at digital display boards for early warnings in collaboration with Meghalaya SDMA and DIPR.
Scientific Assistant Prakhar Purwar emphasised how IMD is actively engaged in climate action by establishing early warning systems and collaborating with different agencies to assist citizens in vulnerable areas.
Additionally, the IMD also highlighted the forecast of heavy rain with thunderstorms and lightning expected in Meghalaya on March 25 and 26, due to a cyclonic circulation over northeast Assam and its neighborhood and concluded with information on light rain recorded in Meghalaya over the last 24 hours.
