SHILLONG, April 15: NPP spokesperson Himalaya M Shangpliang on Monday claimed the law-and-order situation in Meghalaya is quite good despite the unnatural death of three non-tribal people in less than a month.
He termed the murder of a labourer in Shillong as unfortunate and said the government is ensuring incidents of violence and clashes do not happen.
Amidst the ongoing mudslinging between the NPP and the VPP battling for the Shillong parliamentary seat, the former has asked the leadership of the latter to restrain and discipline its cadres.
Reacting to the war of words, Shangpliang said there have been attempts by certain political parties to disrupt the campaigning and foment trouble.
Pointing out that the law-and-order enforcement agencies have been asked to ensure smooth campaigning, Shangpliang said the VPP members need to behave.
“We respect other parties and we expect them to respect the NPP but things have not happened that way,” he said while adding that supporters of the VPP have disrupted every election meeting of the NPP.
Referring to the ECI guidelines, he said the VPP is a party comprising scholars and lecturers and should thus ask its members and supporters to be restrained and disciplined.
