Phensidyl worth Rs 18 lakh seized

NONGPOH: The Nongpoh Police on Wednesday night seized a huge consignment of Phensidyl cough syrup while it was being transported to Tripura at Shangbangla under Nongpoh Police Station. Four people were also arrested in this connection.

According to Deputy Superintendent of Police, R Pathaw the market value of the consignment would be around Rs 18 lakh.

Pathaw informed that the patrol party at Shangbangla became suspicious of the movement of a private vehicle (Scorpio) bearing registration number ML 04 A 9950 as the driver drove rashly overtaking a truck.

On halting the vehicle, the police detected a consignment of Phensidyl following which the two occupants– Rajiv Devnath (33) and Mohabeb Sutradhar (35)– were arrested.

The DSP also informed that the police later took action on the information provided by the two and seized another vehicle (a Mahindra Xylo) bearing registration number TR 01 AG 0715.

While police recovered 1800 bottles of Phensidyl from the Scorpio, 1955 bottles were seized from the Mahindra Xylo whose occupants, Apu Saha (35) and Narayan Acharjee (40) were also arrested.

Police informed that the bottles were concealed inside the seats and doors of the vehicles.

The DSP informed that the police are trying to zero in on the main dealers from Kolkata and Tripura.
